  1. Hopefully, this week, April vacation 2017 will be when EmilyB gets to start riding Parzi again. She has been working him in hand, longing, free-longing, and generally putting up with his shenanigans, with no "reward" for her.

He feels fine enough to kick whenever anyone looks at him... with that left hind he injured, so it's time he started doing his job!

  2. The mud being what it is... deep, I asked Madi to ride him Saturday, 4/22. She worked on asking him to yield his shoulders, lengthen and straighten his walk (on the "best" footing), and simply pay attention! It went well and they were definitely straighter when we finished.

  3. I got a chance to ride Parzi today, so he worked two days in a row. We worked on collected walking, and he needed a lot of convincing to move forward through the mud. Collection didn't really happen. I carried a stick, which helped. I was able to trot from K to C across the ring, and he was fantastic. He was willing, happy and forward. He seems to love working, and I think he's happier now that he's back in action. The only shenanigans happened when pony got too close to his back end. Thanks Ali.

I will say that he suddenly is THE stud muffin that all 3 mares are trying to impress. He's loving that role.

    1. He does need to not be so defensive, thanks Ali for helping make him better in the show ring, when others pass too close! :-)

  4. Today I finally got to ride Parzi! I worked on keeping him bent slightly to the inside, and bending around our corners, also lengthening his walk. When I asked properly and had my hands in the correct position I got a better response. We also did some trot. He was foreword into the trot transition, so I had to make sure I had more contact as I was asking him to trot.

  5. Road Parzi again today! Began lunging him, he was very attentive and listening but LAZY! I rode for about 30 minutes 10 minuet walk warm up, 10 minute trot, 10 minute walk cool down. Worked on bending in the corners, and asking with my hands properly. It's amazing how well it works once your doing it correctly! Also worked on walking foreword with contact on my rains.

  6. I rode Parzi Weds 5/10. It was interesting, and I don't think he was a very happy guy. To his credit, the footing was poor. He was not happy and his movement was not free and swingy unless his head was way down. I'm wondering if his back was sore. I used the new saddle with just a saddle pad under it. When I asked for trot, I got resistance. We cantered twice (his idea, not mine) and had some mild bucking. I stayed on, but it was close. Riding a circle was not much better. He was a good boy in hand, which was a major improvement.

  7. I rode Parzi Sunday 5/14 for about 40 minutes. His back was sore before I tacked, so I made sure to liniment and massage his back. I got it to a point where he wasn't reacting when I felt his back. I also stretched his legs. He really enjoys his shoulders/ front legs being stretched! He was really good when I rode. He listened well and was bendy! He wasn't lazy, but wasn't so forward that when I asked him to trot that I was keeping him from trying to canter.

  8. I rode Parzi today for about an hour! His feet are long so he was tripping a lot, but he gets them done tomorrow. yay! Parzi seemed to really listen to me today, and I didn't feel like I had to use my leg as much as I sometimes have to. I few times I asked him to leg yeild on an off the rail and he seemed to understand what I was asking and he willingly did it. He also bent around corners when I asked him to. Parzi was also great in hand and and when I asked him to halt from the trot he actually stopped already standing square more times than not!

  9. Emily B rode Parzi 8/23 and GOT the canter. It was so slow, you could count the rhythm easily. In general, we were working on soft canter transitions and very simple lead changes.

  10. Parzi was good for Michelle on 8/29. Michelle is in the early stages learning about jumping, so she was trotting courses of poles, trying to understand turns and distances. Parzi made it obvious when the turn or distance wasn't good!

  11. Emily B rode Parzi 8/30 and he scared the living daylights out of us, he was dead lame in his left front again! Turns out it was a rock in his sneakers, his Old Mac boots.

Canter transitions were excellent when Emily set him up well, canter was not too discombobulated.

  12. Today, 9/18, Parzi got shoes with wedge pads on. The shoes were his from 18 months ago, and the heels had to be opened up because his hooves are wider now than then! Yay!

His right foot is slightly smaller, and he was a bit more sensitive on that side while Scott was driving nails. Obviously that one is "worse". Parzi lowered his head and closed his eyes during most of the shoeing, on his left, the heel nails were the only ones that made him notice, the right side as I said was more sensitive, but nothing really to worry about. He will have today off on flat/dry ground to get used to his new feet!

After wedge pads, we can go with more aggressive shoes and trimming techniques to keep him comfortable. As I would like to get 5+ more years out of him, I wanted to make sure we had options still.

  13. So, after the shoeing, Parzi definitely trips less. I thought he had been stretching his hind end out behind himself when just standing, but I took a photo Saturday, 9/23, and it looks like, while, yes, he does get a little out behind, he's also getting his front end forward. Hmmmmm.....

  14. Parzi was excellent for Erin at the WP 4-H Youth Show September 30. She rode New Beginner and MaryEllen was their helper in the ring.

However, on Tuesday, October 3 he started bucking for no reason with a beginner rider up! Amazingly enough, she stayed on, and brought him back to the halt, but what was up with that?! I checked him for bee stings, sore spots, anything that could have caused a problem, but he really just looked like he was entertaining himself!

I hopped on him for a moment Thursday, October 5 after Emily was done riding to see how he bends and if I could get him to trot through the 18' cones while bending. Wow, is he dead to leg. When I really dug into him he wanted to throw a temper tantrum, but after Tuesday, I was prepared and didn't let him. It was not fun for me riding him for those 3 minutes. Of course I had already finished riding Wicky, so I was whupped when I started!
